Dr David Weikart

Dr David Weikart, founder and president-emeritus of the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation, died on 9 December at the age of 72 after a long struggle with leukaemia. From the early 1960s until he retired in 2000, he worked to better the lives of children worldwide by establishing two studies of the long-term effects of early education on children's lives - the High/Scope Perry Pre-school Project from 1962 to 1967 and the High/Scope Curriculum Comparison Project from 1967 to 1970. Dr Weikart founded the High/Scope Foundation in 1970, which remains at the forefront of educational reform throughout the world.

Joan Norris, director of High/Scope UK, said, 'The knowledge that we have "made a difference" is something to aspire to. For most of us the difference is confined to the people we have met, perhaps children we have taught. But for Dr Weikart the difference he made was huge. Children, parents and carers are stronger for the leadership of Dr Weikart in the development of the High/ Scope approach. We shall miss him.'
