Early Literacy Work With Families

EARLY LITERACY WORK WITH FAMILIES: Policy, Practice and Research. By Cathy Nutbrown, Peter Hannon and Anne Morgan. (Sage, 19.99, 1 4129 0375 0, 020 7324 8500). Reviewed by Marian Whitehead, language and early years consultant The project described in detail in this book is arguably the most important and well-researched UK initiative for developing early literacy work with parents of young children. The project, Raising Early Achievement in Literacy (REAL), was a collaboration between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield LEA, schools and centres. At the heart of the approach is a framework focused on the strengths of families as literacy users and tutors. Specifically, this highlights family 'opportunities', 'recognition', 'intentions' and 'models' for literacy use (ORIM).

The project described in detail in this book is arguably the most important and well-researched UK initiative for developing early literacy work with parents of young children.

Readers will find inspirational case studies from teachers using the ORIM framework with families and accounts of the opportunities for further adult learning for parents who wanted them. There are illuminating insights into children's perspectives on family literacy, including good news about fathers and boys.

Most significantly for me, reading the book now, is the inclusion of Cathy Nutbrown's 1999 observation of a reception class literacy hour (pages 5-10). Don't miss it!
