Early years settings sought for new study into the impact of devices on children's development

Early years settings are being invited to take part in a new study into the impact of interactive devices on the health and development of children.

Sheffield Hallam University is looking for nurseries, pre-schools and childminders in West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, to take part in new research to understand the advantages and disadvantages of smartphone and tablet use on the health and development of children under the age of six.

It will involve a simple assessment with children at the age of three and then repeated a year later. The assessment will include age-appropriate activities to explore learning and motor skills as well as ‘easy’ questionnaires for staff and parents.

Settings that take part will receive up to £200, while parents will receive vouchers of up to £60 for being involved.

Findings from the iKids Study, led by Professor Azevedo at Sheffield Hallam University, will be used to shape evidence-based guidance for families and early years settings on device usage.
