With the summer holidays drawing to a close, many newly-qualified childcarers are about to take up their first jobs in a sector offering more opportunities than ever before (Special Report, pages 12-13). Unemployment is not likely to be a problem for these new entrants to the early years field. The continuing expansion of the sector and the many Government initiatives that are part of the National Childcare Strategy mean that both the number and types of jobs on offer are on the increase. New areas such as Sure Start are proving attractive for those with early years qualifications.

What haven't changed, of course, are the salaries on offer in most areas of childcare. It's no surprise, then, that many college leavers are thinking wider and higher about their career options - midwifery, paediatric nursing and teaching, for example. The recruitment crisis in childcare will not be relieved if this trend continues.
