The author of children’s books Elmer, Not Now, Bernard and Mr Benn, David McKee, has died at the age of 87.

McKee passed away at his home in the South of France after a short illness, his published Anderson Press confirmed.

The children’s author and illustrator is best known for his picture book Elmer, which has sold more than 10 million copies.

McKee wrote and illustrated 29 Elmer books, which collectively have been translated into more than 60 languages, with the popular character being printed on clothing and turned into children’s toys available all over the world.

His series of books about an eponymous explorer, Mr Benn, who through a magic costume shop went on a series of adventures, was turned into an animated programme. The series celebrated its 50th anniversary since it premiered on BBC, in 2021.
