End of the line?

Further to Ruth Thomson's feature on the Neighbourhood Nurseries scheme ('On track?', 21 February), I am the Foundation Stage co-ordinator in a maintained primary school, serving a deprived area within the wealthy surrounds of Surrey. A neighbourhood nursery is to be built in the grounds of our school. I have had serious misgivings about the scheme since its conception, because it is only to be funded for three years. The Government needs to put money into the existing nurseries and playgroups, rather than building from scratch, and listen to the local community who are opposed to it.

We are struggling to fill the nurseries and playgroups and after-school clubs at the moment. So one wonders what will happen in three years time when the funding stops and parents can no longer afford to pay for childcare.
