EU funding helps clubs under threat

New European funding is set to provide a lifeline to 36 out-of-school clubs in Northern Ireland. PlayBoard, an organisation that supports voluntary out-of-school clubs, had warned last month that more than 40 clubs faced imminent closure if core funding was not received by August (Nursery World, 12 May).

PlayBoard, an organisation that supports voluntary out-of-school clubs, had warned last month that more than 40 clubs faced imminent closure if core funding was not received by August (Nursery World, 12 May).

But last week the European Union's Peace and Reconciliation Fund, which will fund 90 of the 237 out-of-school clubs in Northern Ireland up until August 2005, announced that PlayBoard and the Training for Women's Network as a consortium will receive 2.8m under section 1.5 of the fund.

Regional manager of PlayBoard, Jacqueline O'Loughlin, said, 'We welcome the significant investment from the EU to the out-of-school sector. With our portion of the funding - which we are confident will be no less than 1m, but has yet to be agreed - we hope to be able to fund approximately 15 per cent of the 237 projects. But the nature of the funding structure does not necessarily mean that we can fund those projects in jeopardy.'
