Exemption process is spelled out

Nurseries and childminders can now find out how to apply for exemptions from specific parts of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Children's minister Beverley Hughes said last month that parents andproviders could apply to be exempt from particular elements of thelearning and development requirements the EYFS 'on philosophicalgrounds' (News, 3 July).

Childcare providers can apply for limited exemptions, where a majorityof parents support doing so.

Parents can apply for exemptions if they consider some or all of thelearning and development requirements to conflict with their religiousor philosophical views.

The DCSF guidance published online sets out the steps that providers andlocal authorities will need to follow to opt out of all or part of thelearning and development requirements in the EYFS.

An application must be sent to the Qualifications Curriculum Authority, where casework officers will assess it. It will then be passed to theIndependent Adviser on exemption, Dorian Bradley, the former directorfor children at Ofsted, who will review the evidence and make arecommendation to the children's secretary on whether the exemptionshould be granted or not.
