Extra support set to reduce time pressure on teachers

The new school year brings teachers a promise of more time for lesson-planning and marking with the introduction of the final phase of the national workload agreement, designed to reduce pressure on teachers by increasing the role of support staff. All schools in England and Wales are now legally required to give teachers 10 per cent of their working week to spend on PPA - planning, preparation and assessment.

Teachers will no longer have to carry out administrative duties and support staff will take on jobs such as taking the register and photocopying.

Schools minister Jacqui Smith said that 23,000 schools had confirmed they would give their teachers PPA time from the beginning of term.

Christina McAnea, Unison's head of education services, said schools had the opportunity to use the skills of support staff 'to play a greater role in delivering education' but called for them to be paid 'at the correct level'.
