Family food bill now 27 higher

Families are paying around 27 more per week than this time last year on basic food items, a price comparison website has revealed.

According to figures from mysupermarket.co.uk and based on food shoppingat Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's, a family of four who spent an average100 per week in August 2007 would now have to spend 127 tobuy the same items - an increase of 1,404 over a year.

Dave Prentis, general secretary of public services union Unison, whichlast month took strike action linking its members' pay offer to therising cost of living, said, 'The Government's unjust public sector paypolicy means that teaching assistants, nurses, librarians, care workers,home carers, nursery staff and hospital cleaners are having to cope withthe biggest rise in inflation since records began, on a real pay cut.'
