'Father-friendly' measures pay off

Childcare settings need to be more 'father-friendly' if men are to play an active role in their child's pre-school education, the Pre-school Learning Alliance said last week. New research from the Alliance has revealed that the overwhelmingly female childcare workforce is a significant factor contributing towards fathers'

lack of involvement in their child's pre-school attendance and experiences.

The first strand of the unpublished report, Fathers'

involvement in pre-school settings, written by Tim Kahn, presents the views of a 10 per cent sample of Alliance practitioners - about 1,500 - on the barriers that prevent fathers from taking an active role in their child's pre-school setting. Five per cent of those working in Alliance settings are men, compared with a national average of 2 per cent in all childcare.
