Favourite things

Which is the tops - a pool table, a rope, a camcorder or a karaoke machine? Eve Boggenpoel finds out why each of these resources is the favourite at an after-school club TOP TABLE

TOP TABLE

At Acorn to Oaks, in Stanford le Hope, Essex, one of the most popular pieces of equipment is the pool table. Proprietor Rita Coston says, 'Because pool tables are kept in adult places, children usually have to wait until the grown-ups are finished before they can have a go. This way they get first pick.

'But it's a great way of involving the parents, and when the kids succeed, they come up with things like, "I like this, I beat my dad",' she adds.

Playing against one of the workers is another favourite, as the children usually win. When she finally won her first game, Rita was dancing round the pool table saying, "I've done it! I've done it!", she recalls.
