Early years managers thinking that their staff will return after the summer holidays feeling refreshed might be in for a rude awakening, according to research by Investors In People, the national awarding body for quality assurance in business management.

It found that more than half of us suffer from the post-holiday blues, dread returning to work after our summer break and feel that our managers are doing little to rekindle our enthusiasm.

The findings pose challenges for childcare employers, when poor morale is already a problem in the sector. Low pay makes staff question whether they are valued; resentments can arise when practitioners see their colleagues leave for better paid jobs on Sure Start projects; and daycare staff may think their skills are ignored when private providers are excluded from Government programmes.
