Fees: help is available

We used a Lilliput Lodge minibus to take some of our nursery staff members to the Early Years and Primary Teaching Exhibition in Manchester last month. We laid this on in recognition of all they do and how much they care for the children they work with. They brought back some copies of Nursery World and I was struck by 'We can't afford to work' (Letters, 5 May). I believe the letter from the nursery nurse, a working mother earning 5.50 an hour, does not take into account the benefits available to assist people wanting to go back to work.

Lilliput Lodge is in the north of England and some of our staff earn less than the letter writer's 5.50 an hour. Some earn more based on merit and responsibility, but how much we can charge parents limits wages.

The letter writer states she pays 4 per hour for childcare. In our nursery, and in general in the north of England, this seems very high. We have an hourly rate of about 2.
