First UK Montessori degree to launch

Careers & Training
The University of East London has joined with the Montessori Training Institute to offer the UK’s first full degree in Montessori Education.

The BA (Hons) Montessori Pedagogy Foundation course will launch in September at UEL’s Cass School of Education, Communities and Social Sciences.

Students on the three-year degree course will study the full Montessori approach for children aged three to six, as advocated by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), the organisation set-up by Maria Montessori in 1929 to safeguard and promote the integrity of the approach.

For the first two years of the course, students will be taught at the Montessori Training Institute in London, with the third year and degree honours taught at UEL. Students will also undergo work placements in Montessori schools and classes.

Alongside the degree, students will receive the AMI teaching diploma.

Dr Carrie Weston, head of UEL’s Cass School of Education, Communities and Social Sciences, said, ‘UEL is immensely proud to be offering the first full degree in Montessori Education in collaboration with the Maria Montessori Institute.

‘Montessori education represents first-class standards in early childhood learning and the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) certified Montessori teachers are highly valued professionals.

‘UEL has an outstanding reputation in teacher education and childhood studies, so the addition of the first BA (Hons) Montessori Education is a perfect collaborative union.’

Louise Livingston, director of training at the Montessori Training Institute, said, ‘The Maria Montessori Institute is delighted to engage in this new collaboration with UEL.

‘We are opening the door to more individuals who are interested in becoming AMI certified Montessori teachers through the opportunity that this undergraduate degree provides.’
