Many qualified and experienced staff who would otherwise be lost to the childcare field because of their caring responsibilities now have an opportunity to work flexibly (in many cases temporarily).
It can often be a win-win situation, where the employer retains a valued member of staff and the additional 'vacancy' created could give other employees a chance to take on extra hours, or give newly qualified students an opportunity to gain valuable experience.
Many organisations such as the Daycare Trust and Working Families can offer support to employers who wish to help their employees with work/life balance issues.
In Wrexham we are delivering a programme of support to local employers funded through Equal (ESF) funding. A new guide on work/life balance issues for employers and employees, 'Getting the Balance Right', will be launched in September and distributed through the Children's Information Services in Wales.
