Frameworks to provide clearer guidance

From September, the revised literacy and numeracy frameworks will have greater unity with the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The intention is also to give teachers a clearer set of age-related outcomes linked to children's progress from birth to 11.

A consultation on the draft frameworks by National Strategies put out this week states that, 'Both the EYFS and the renewed literacy and mathematics frameworks will provide integrated advice to practitioners about supporting children's care, learning and development from birth to the end of the reception year.'

The frameworks will also be a key method for implementing the recommendations of the Rose review, which include the use of formal synthetic phonics in teaching children to read.

The document sets out core learning in literacy for each age group. The section on the Foundation Stage says children should 'use their phonic knowledge to read simple regular words and make phonetically plausible attempts at longer or more complex words'.

The draft frameworks are at www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/.

Consultation ends on 2 June and revised frameworks will be available from September.
