Free board game to promote children's rights

Did you know that under Article 13 of the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, children have the 'right to find things out'? A board game entitled 'On The Right Track' has been developed by Out of School writer and playwork trainer Philip Waters to make it much more fun for children to learn about their rights. Packaged like a fold-up map to A4 size, the game opens up with the game-board on one side and templates for cards, dice and counters on the other. The idea is for children to photocopy the latter on to card and to decorate the game with paints or crayons. Funded by The Scarman Trust and the Millennium Awards Commission, 'On The Right Track' was developed as part of the KC the Bear initiative in which a teddy bear, with a pack of activity suggestions and a full copy of the UN Convention can be invited to visit clubs throughout the UK (see 'Here Comes KC', Out of School, 9 May 2002). KC was launched from Poppleton's School's Out Club in York, for which Philip Waters is co-ordinator, last summer and has visited clubs from Northumbria to Devon.
