An independent selection of new products and resources You've probably noticed the increasing amount of food products that boast added probiotics, that is, 'friendly bacteria' intended to aid good digestion and promote a healthy immune system; well, now a similar thing is happening with infant foods. Milupa has introduced prebiotics - naturally occurring nutrients found in breast milk and some fruits and vegetables (bananas, chicory, tomatoes) into a range of 13 recipes. According to the company, 'a baby's digestive system contains many friendly bacteria found naturally in the gut but... when a baby is weaned, the number of friendly bacteria in her digestive system start to decline'. Friendly bacteria are important because they inhibit the growth of other, potentially harmful, bacteria, assist the immune system and help the body to produce certain vitamins. The new Milupa range includes six breakfast recipes - four savoury, two desserts - and baby rice, all priced 1.95 for 125g.
