Gaelic for children

Parents can now introduce their children to Gaelic, even if they do not know the language themselves, thanks to an online course launched at this year's Royal National Mod in Perth.
The Parents Course has been developed by Canan, the development arm of Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the Gaelic college on the Isle of Skye, and learndirect Scotland.

Donella Beaton, chief executive of Canan, said, 'There are over 3,000 pupils in Gaelic- medium education and quite a lot of them come from homes where no Gaelic is spoken.'

The scheme is split into three sections: pre-natal and newborn, toddler and pre-school. Each covers typical scenarios for its age group, such as comforting a crying baby, having breakfast, going out to play or getting dressed for school.

They can then go through the course step by step or pick out different scenarios. Canan is working on additional publicity material that will soon be delivered to all pre-school groups.

Interested parents should contact their local learndirect centre or telephone the helpline on 0808 100 900 for a password to log on to the course.
