Children with disabilities and special needs are being given the chance to take the risks all children need by some far-sighted projects. Anyone entertaining the idea that children with disabilities cannot enjoy activities that carry an element of risk should check out the boisterous play that goes on in London adventure playgrounds run by the charity Kids.

Joanna Ryam, national development director for the charity, which delivers services for disabled children nationwide, says, 'It is just as important for a disabled child to scratch their knee as it is for any child. It only takes slight adjustments to playgrounds, such as lower level equipment and the addition of ramps, to ensure that children with disabilities can really go wild.'

Kids places great emphasis on the need for challenging play. Its level 3 course, Inclusive Play, endorsed by Skills Active, brings together the theoretical and the practical, and also encourages a positive attitude towards managing risk.
