Getting to know you

Listening to children and reflecting on practice were at the heart of a unique project described by Moira Moran, early years specialist teacher working with the Inclusion Support Service of Nottinghamshire County Council A group of Nottinghamshire practitioners recently completed the pilot stage of a very successful project called 'Tuning in to children', run by the Early Years Specialist Teacher team with six of the private and voluntary settings they support.

A group of Nottinghamshire practitioners recently completed the pilot stage of a very successful project called 'Tuning in to children', run by the Early Years Specialist Teacher team with six of the private and voluntary settings they support.

The project was informed by the five outcomes of Every Child Matters, the Thomas Coram Centre's training on Listening to Young Children's Voices, the EPPE study's findings on the value of sustained shared thinking, and the Ofsted question - what is it like for a child here?

The aims of the project were to encourage practitioners to reflect more on their practice, to enhance their skills in listening to young children's many voices, and to increase their ability to adapt provision and planning in response to what they hear.
