The National Early Years Network (NEYN) called for investment following a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on UK early childhood and education policy. The report said, 'While there has been a very substantial increase in the amount spent on early childhood education and care over the past few years, multiple initiatives make it challenging to calculate expenditure.

'The indirect funding approach via tax credits adds further incertitude about the long-term viability of projects. Services which depend on income generation from poor parents are likely to be particularly vulnerable.' NEYN chief executive Eva Lloyd called on the Government to invest more and over a longer term in direct services for children and families. She said, 'We know these services are an essential component in a comprehensive anti-poverty strategy.
