A paragon of how play provision can unite deprived communities is at work in Glasgow, says Barbara Millar Parents and children from all over the east end of Glasgow are benefiting from a wealth of new local play initiatives.

Parents and children from all over the east end of Glasgow are benefiting from a wealth of new local play initiatives.

The initiatives are either co-ordinated, led or inspired by Playbusters, an organisation set up to remedy the lack of good quality, safe play areas in the east end of the city. Playbusters works in some of the most deprived communities in Britain - Shettleston, Parkhead, Tollcross, Bridgeton, Calton, Camlachie and Dalmarnock - where unemployment is high, housing conditions and health are often poor and territorial issues sometimes lead to violence and crime.

Four years ago, when Playbusters was established, its steering committee was made up of officers from various council committees - housing, education, social services - with some community representation. Now they have taken a back seat and parents actively lead the venture.
