Good handwriting tips

* Always ensure that pencils are sharpened and books ready so that handwriting exercises are taken seriously. * Throw away scruffy materials and don't force children to use scrap paper for handwriting practice.

* Make sure that left-handed writers have plenty of elbow room when working, as they are more likely to be hampered by their right-handed neighbours.

* Handwriting is a good early indicator of dyslexia: although many young children reverse letters, it is worth making a note for future reference and other teachers so that children do not slip through the net. Encourage children having problems to join their letters up, as this means they remove their pencil from the paper less, cutting down on the opportunities to start letters incorrectly.
