Often they are part of large groups dominated by older children, where planning for the environment and play opportunities is based on Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage. This can result in inappropriate practices, such as large and prolonged 'circle times' or being sat at tables to 'concentrate' on doing worksheets, mistakenly viewed as a means to develop early literacy or numeracy skills.
