Hard work to get here

I was disappointed to read Alan Bentley's column (17 May) both as a provider and as a Chair who works hard to ensure the sector is properly represented. NDNA has come a long way since it was set up as a charity in 1999 with the mission of promoting quality in early years. Being seen as a credible voice for day nurseries has taken much hard work, including campaigning and endless meetings. Being a truly representative organisation does not happen overnight.

As a nursery owner, I too have witnessed dramatic, sometimes threatening changes within the sector. It is tempting to try to shout loudly about how damaging these are, but this won't achieve a thing, nor will encouraging people to fragment into separate groups.

As chair of NDNA I have seen how time, commitment and constructive, workable suggestions bring about change. Along with NDNA staff, board members and network chairs I have been involved in working to address the needs of members. Often this work is behind the scenes, building long-term relationships so that we can share views.
