Healthy and happy

A new set of guidelines for everyone working with babies and toddlers draws together research and guidance from several countries. Juliet Hancock explains what it's designed to offer 'It is the responsibility of all adults to ensure that children thrive. It is the responsibility of everybody that children grow up as healthy and as happy as possible.'1 On 18 January the Scottish Executive, in association with Learning and Teaching Scotland, launched 'Birth to three: supporting our youngest children', the national guidance for all those involved with the well-being, care and education of babies and young children.

It is the responsibility of everybody that children grow up as healthy and as happy as possible.'1 On 18 January the Scottish Executive, in association with Learning and Teaching Scotland, launched 'Birth to three: supporting our youngest children', the national guidance for all those involved with the well-being, care and education of babies and young children.

The guidance provides support and advice for early years workers, social care and health practitioners and students preparing to work with young children and their families. It draws on national and international birth-to- three research and acknowledges notable practices from other countries in caring for young children, as well as important action research taking place within Scotland.
