Healthy eating: School meal failings noted

More consultation with pupils and parents is the key to improving the take-up of school meals, Ofsted said last week.

Its report Food in schools: encouraging healthier eating found that thenumber of pupils eating school meals had declined in 19 out of 27schools surveyed since the new school food standards were introducedlast September.

Dining provision and supervision were highlighted as elements forimprovement. 'Three of the primary schools visited reported that theskills of younger pupils were poorly developed: they could not manage aknife and fork or make conversation during a meal,' the report said.

Breakfast clubs were started successfully in many schools after staffsaid that some pupils missed out on breakfast.
