Healthy rise in childcarers

* The number of registered childcare providers in England rose from 101,800 in June 2003 to 106,200 by 31 March 2004, while the total of registered places grew from 1,313,900 to 1,415,700, according to figures published by Ofsted. The number of childminders rose by 2,400 to 72,400, providing 319,700 places; full daycare providers went up by 1,100 to 11,000, supplying 456,300 places - a sharp rise from 398,000 last June. There was a similar growth in the number of out-of-school clubs, with 9,200 registered with Ofsted in March this year and providing 326,700 places, compared with last year's 8,300 providers and 293,400 places. The number of creche providers went up by 300 with more than 5,000 places.

The only category in which numbers fell was in sessional daycare, with providers down from 11,700 last June to 11,300 in March. The number of places also dropped from 281,200 to 274,100.
