Mobile phone masts are proliferating near nurseries and schools, contrary to official advice. Simon Vevers hears the arguments against them
Mobile phones have become the must-have accessory for millions of us, including one in four children aged seven to ten. But a consequence of the rapid growth of mobile use has been the peppering of the UK landscape with thousands of mobile phone masts, many of them sited near nurseries, schools and hospitals.
They not only are unsightly, they may also harm our health. Campaigners, led by organisations such as Mast Sanity, argue that it is their use of pulsed microwave radiation which can cause a variety of illnesses, including headaches, nausea and sleep disorders. Masts have also been blamed for cancer clusters in parts of the UK.
