Highly rated setting to see the stars next year

A national star-rating scheme for early years settings in England is to be piloted by the government next year. Investors in Children will rate nurseries and childcare providers on the facilities and quality of service they offer to parents. The Department for Education and Skills plans to consult on the scheme in the autumn and will then start a pilot scheme in the spring, with the initiative launched nationwide in september 2002.

When the prime minister Tony Blair first announced the scheme in March, he said it would be 'a practical guide on the facilities and quality of care abd early education available'.

The team devloping Investors in Children has been joined by Dr Tony Munton, a senior research officer in the Thomas Coram Research Unit at the University of London's Institute of Education, who has been seconded to the DfES.
