In brief...

People needing childcare in rural areas experience problems with provision and accessibility, says a report commissioned by the Scottish Executive on services in rural areas, published last week. The report found there was a lack of information about childcare services in rural areas but noted the work of the charity Children in Scotland in raising awareness about provision. It also singled out Highland Pre-School Services, a charity providing a range of services, including accredited vocational training and a special needs grants scheme, for its work in supporting voluntary childcare and early years agencies. Implementing Services in Rural Scotland: A Progress Report, by the Scottish National Rural Partnership (SNRP), can be viewed on the Scottish Executive website at www.scotland.gov.uk/ publications.
