In Brief: Children's health is suffering

Children's health is suffering because they are losing the chance to play outside, a group of experts has warned. In a second letter to the Daily Telegraph, one year after they first voiced concerns (News, 28 September 2006), nearly 300 academics, authors and charity leaders blamed over-anxious parents, computer games and school tests for the decline in 'unstructured, loosely supervised' play, which they said is adversely affecting children's mental health and young people's long term development. The signatories include Dr Penelope Leach and author Steve Biddulph.
