In brief...Children's emotional intelligence

Children's emotional intelligence is the focus of a booklet published by the Child Guidance Service of Knowsley Borough Council in Merseyside. Helping my child to develop emotional intelligence was written by senior educational psychologist Gloria Pollack as part of an emotional literacy programme. Topics include what a child needs to learn about feelings and the benefits of being an emotionally intelligent child. Ms Pollack said, 'If children are confident with good self-esteem, they will be better adapted individuals. Being aware of their own emotions will also help them to understand other people's emotions, hence improving their relationships.' The booklet is being distributed to parents via teachers and health visitors, and will be used as part of a training package for parents in schools. It is available for 4 (inc p&p) on 0151 489 6136.
