In my view: Be ambassadors for childcare

In National Childcare Week (11-15 June), run by the Daycare Trust, many providers are running events to promote their work to parents and the wider community.

These events, some attended by MPs, are complemented by a children'scompetition and a conference for those in the sector.

This year's theme is 'Childcare Benefits for Life' - something of whichthose in the sector may already be convinced. However, judging by thepress coverage over the past few months, not everyone is. We need toknow the facts in order to be ambassadors for childcare and help parentsmake informed choices.

Research shows that good-quality care and education in the early yearshave a positive effect on how children perform at school. At age five, children who had attended pre-school were between four and six monthsahead, in literacy and numeracy, of those who had not. Disadvantagedchildren, in particular, are less likely to have special educationalneeds if they have attended a pre-school or nursery.
