Industrial action prompts review of fire safety

Industrial action by firefighters has prompted the Department for Education and Skills to renew its fire safety advice for schools and all educational establishments, including early years settings. The DfES's fire safety guide on www.teachernet.gov.uk/fire includes a checklist of hazards that can be dealt with by schools. It says particular attention should be paid to fire prevention measures in science labs and school kitchens. Schools have been reminded to check that their evacuation procedures and fire precautions and insurance are up to date. The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's fire safety website is at www.firekills.gov.uk, and queries about safety issues can be addressed to the DfES Public Health and Safety Team on 020 7925 5886.
