Initiative Overload with National Strategies

The frequent introduction of new initiatives by National Strategies in junior and senior schools has reduced their potential effectiveness, says a new report from Ofsted.

The National Strategies: a review of impact found that evaluation of the programmes was also a weakness among many schools and local authorities. The Letters and Sounds programme was found to be one of the most popular of the National Strategies initiatives in the 33 primary schools visited. However, when asked about its impact, the schools often found it difficult to separate its effect from that of the many other actions to improve outcomes. The report is available at www.ofsted.gov.uk/publications.
