Inspection ratings in Wales improve

Provision
More young children are achieving good or better standards in every area of learning compared with last year, according to Estyn, the inspectorate for education and training in Wales, which published its annual report last week.

None of the 121 PVI settings inspected by Estyn had any significant shortcomings. However, there were weaknesses in Welsh language development in a fifth of the English language-medium schools.

The report found assessment procedures had improved, with the number of settings judged to have good or better procedures jumping by 14 per cent from last year.

Self-evaluation was an area of weakness in a minority of settings, with some practitioners uncertain or unconvinced of its value.

Among the case studies, Pontymoile Under Fives Nursery, in Pontypool Active Learning Centre in Pontypool Park, Torfaen, won praise for 'well embedded and effective' self-evaluation and 'strong systems in place to monitor and review the quality of provision for children and parental satisfaction'.
