'Intervene in pay row', say MSPs

Last month, talks between public services union Unison and the employers'

representative Cosla broke down after Unison rejected a recommendation of a pay rise of between 6.7 and 12.5 per cent, depending on grade. Cosla said it could not mandate this offer to local councils. For two years Unison has been seeking a rise of around 3,000 for nursery nurses to address the issue of low pay and reflect responsibilities that have been added to their work.

In a debate last week in the Scottish Parliament, Scottish National Party MSP Adam Ingram said, 'Now it the time for ministers to intervene. We should address the needs of this workforce now. It is the minister's responsibility to deliver on the Executive's stated aims for early years education and to support a workforce that has been discriminated against.'
