Investment promise 'failed' for services

Early years organisations across Northern Ireland are 'watching with envy' the amount of money the Government is investing in England's Sure Start services and children's centres.

Speaking after the Cross-Border Collaboration conference last week in Armagh, Siobhan Fitzpatrick, chief executive of early years organisation NIPPA said, 'We have not had the level of investment promised in children's centres, and the 10m that went into developing Sure Start services in 1997 did not go far enough to create sustainable services for children in all areas of disadvantage.'

NIPPA said that there is now a 'vital need' for political leaders across Ireland to jump on the childcare bandwagon and give early years the recognition and support it needs.
