Ireland-wide unit for children with autism

* The governments of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have agreed to set up and fund the first all-Ireland centre for educating autistic children and young people. The Department of Education in Belfast, in conjunction with the Department of Education and Science in Dublin, are to buy jointly the former St Joseph's Adolescent Centre in Middleton, Co Armagh, to re-open in autumn 2003 as the All-Ireland Centre for Excellence for the education and training of children and young people with autistic spectrum disorders.

Education minister Martin McGuinness said, 'This centre will allow all the professionals from both health and education sectors to develop expertise which can be shared more widely. I am particularly excited that this will include expertise in working with families with children who have autistic spectrum disorders.'
