It's a great time to be a childminder

I am really sad that Hazel Robinson had such a negative experience of trying to register as a childminder (Letters, 23 August), for I have been a registered childminder for 12 years and have found it to be a really positive experience. In answer to some points Hazel made, childminders in the main earn above the national minimum rate, because they do mind more than one child. In fact, in the summer holidays, when they mind school-age children, they will earn a gross wage of 12.50 to 15 per hour.

There are several other monetary facts to consider when taking up childminding. You will not have to find childcare costs for your own children. Based on two children, and Hazel's figures of 2.50 per hour per child, this is a cost saving. Childminders do not travel to work, so there is the saving of the cost of bus fares and the time element of being stuck in traffic jams. Childminders also have the advantage of being able to attend all their (and minded children's) sports days and school events.
