Leading nursery chain set to double its sites

The fourth largest nursery group in the UK, Kids Unlimited, announced last week that it has obtained 12m funding to double in size from 32 to 64 nurseries over the next five years. The 12m funding from Friends Ivory & Sime Private Equity plc and National Westminster Bank puts Kids Unlimited in a strong position to increase its market share as the leading chains race to expand. Founded by husband and wife Jean and Stewart Pickering, who are both former teachers, in 1983, Kids Unlimited is one of the UK's longest-established nursery groups. It has pursued a policy of operating purpose-built nurseries on business parks or major commuter routes as well as workplace nurseries within employers' premises.

New nurseries will be developed in clusters in the target areas of the north-west, London, Oxford and Cambridge. The number of childcare places provided will rise from 2,500 to 7,500 over the next five years, creating more than 1,000 new jobs.
