Learning difficulties

Some children may have generalised learning difficulties, which will affect their speech and language as well as other aspects of their cognitive development. If a child is generally slow to learn new skills this may be the explanation. If you suspect a child may have social communication problems or a learning difficulty, this will require sensitive discussion between nursery staff and parents, and then referral to their local GP and/or child development centre.

These suggestions are only recommended as guidelines. It is important that all early years practitioners know how to contact their local speech and language therapy service for advice, and become familiar with the referral procedure.

Crucially, however, is the need for early years practitioners to be aware of the importance of language development for all children, and to develop the skills to encourage natural communication within the setting.
