Playing with words needn't be dull. Lynne Garner suggests a range of games to put the fun into literacy Some children see words as boring and the learning of them tedious.

Some children see words as boring and the learning of them tedious.

But making learning into a game will hopefully get them excited about the power words can have. We've gathered together a range of games that will prove just how much fun words can be.

PYRAMID PLAY

You will need:

* Large piece of paper

* Pen or pencil

* Stopwatch

Before you start:

Each child or team will need a copy of the pyramid grid (below).

Aim of the game: Against the clock, the children have to come up with eight different words ranging from just two letters to nine letters in length.
