DIPLOMA DEFENDED

I was surprised to read that Ofqual had criticised the new Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce. As an early adopter of the new qualifications, the Pre-school Learning Alliance has been very pleased with the positive reception that we have received from learners and employers and also from tutors and assessors. This was much more positive than we had expected, since change is always a challenge.

The reasons given in the Nursery World article (News, 9 December) were that the diploma lacked 'opportunities for work experience and the chance to progress to further and higher education'. We would argue that these issues rather depend on the type of learner taking the qualification and the circumstances in which they study.
