The official launch of the Child Trust Fund has sparked a battle between banks to secure custom from parents. The Sunday Times reported that Barclays is giving away a free Heffalump cuddly toy to parents who apply for its CTF and open a Junior Plus savings account. The Royal Bank of Scotland is offering a bigger incentive, with 250 in vouchers to spend at highstreet stores such as Toys R Us. According to TheGuardian, Ms Greer claimed, '"Big Brother" was demonstrating the role of taunting in the playground, and there are so many children whose lives have been ruined by taunting in the playground.'

A combination of parental cosseting and a lack of practical teaching in schools has bred a nation of 'life-incompetent' children, according to a report in The Scotsman. A study of 1,200 schoolchildren by researchers from Stirling University has found that many of today's youngsters are unable to sew or wash clothes, or remember to boil potatoes before mashing them.
