Meningitis alert follows death

* A meningitis risk at a nursery in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, is being investigated after a two-year-old boy who attended it died on Sunday 17 August. A second child from the nursery is seriously ill in hospital. Doctors said there is a small increased risk of other children from the Penny Cottage Nursery contracting the disease. As a precautionary measure the local Health Protection Agency (HPA) provided antibiotics last week to all children and staff who attended the nursery between Monday 11 August and Friday 15 August. Bromsgrove HPA said that the danger is small as the bacteria causing meningitis is difficult to pass on, but symptoms to be aware of include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache and a non-blanching rash. More information is available from the HPA on (01905) 760 024 or NHS Direct on (0845) 4647.
