Mind the rates appeal

I would advise nurseries receiving their revaluation for business rates this month to think twice before accepting offers from consultants to handle appeals for them. A year ago, our nursery engaged a company offering us a 'no savings, no fee' arrangement. They visited our nursery and told us that there were good prospects of a reduction.

A year ago, our nursery engaged a company offering us a 'no savings, no fee' arrangement. They visited our nursery and told us that there were good prospects of a reduction.

As a naturally suspicious person, I looked carefully at the 'guarantee'

which promised that, in the event of an appeal not being accepted as valid, the retainer of 300 plus VAT would be refunded in full. What, I asked, would happen if an appeal, though valid, did not succeed? The response was quite clear - if no savings are achieved, the fee will be refunded in full.

A year later, the consultants have told us that, because of the size of our building (which has not changed since they first visited it!), the valuation is reasonable and the appeal has been withdrawn. And the fee? After weeks of unanswered calls and letters, we are going to court to recover it.
